On a beautiful summer day off we went on a quest for rest, relaxation, and adventure. Our mode of transportation was anything but the ordinary. No bumper to bumper traffic to the crowded ferry. No rush to the airport terminal with the expectation of delays and crowds. No headache! What was the secret mode of travel that allowed us to arrive at a pristine beach paradise unscathed? A private helicopter charter.

Starting the day at our own pace and schedule was itself a novelty. The gorgeous views of the rocky coast of Connecticut and the waterfront mansions below brought forth the fantasy that we were the billionaires today. Flying high above it all, we approached the sand cliff shores on the Southwest corner of Martha’s Vineyard. Wow, Caribbean clear water in the Northeast! After viewing the sea lions below that were enjoying the day at the beach, we realized that it was only a matter of moments before we would occupy the sands ourselves. What’s that, a grassy field? No, it’s a grass airport called Katama. Katama Airpark is the quintessential grass airfield dating back to the 1920’s. After parking the helicopter, crossing a rural road, and trotting up a small sand dune we arrived at the ‘South Beach’ of Martha’s Vineyard. Not the normal airport experience; it was completely painless. After soaking in some sunshine and taking a leisurely swim we dried off and made our way into Edgartown for some lunch. The view of the harbor and the Chappaquiddick Ferry made a perfect environment for rest and relaxation. The Lobster Rolls were simply the best I’ve ever tasted. After lunch we walked around the harbor and browsed the many unique shops. Then back to the helicopter for a sunset flight home along the North Shore of Long Island. What a delightful day and awesome flight!
